“Absolutely beautiful cottage with everything you need, the welcome pack is a lovely gesture and was very much appreciated.”

The cottage looks exactly like the pictures online it’s clean and cosy especially on an evening with log fire burning, we hope to come back in the near future and have already recommended to friends and family.

The property

Enjoying a prime position within North Wales is this stone-built former miner’s cottage, Garreg Lwyd resting on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park and a short drive away from the beauty of the Cardigan Bay coastline.

Perched in the peaceful village of Tanygrisiau and on the outskirts of the bustling town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this cottage is perfect for a couple seeking a romantic getaway or a group of friends or small families seeking an action-packed adventure.

Enter the cottage and be welcomed into the kitchen/diner, boasting a seamless blend of character and contemporary, with the original stone-built fireplace complementing the range of quality appliances and sleek kitchen units.

Delight in home-cooked dishes at the dining table, making a wonderful social space before heading into the sitting room to relax before heading to bed.

During the winter months, look forward to lighting up the woodburning stove for extra warmth and for a sense of atmosphere as you flick through the channels of the Smart TV.

Upstairs, you will find two elegantly-dressed double bedrooms, both with plush linens and charming furnishings to create welcoming spaces to return to each evening.

If you are visiting during the summer months, be sure to take your morning coffee out onto the rear terraced garden and return of an evening for a spot of alfresco dining as you catch the final glimpses of sunshine.

If you can tear yourself away from this charming abode, venture a short distance into the centre of Blaenau Ffestiniog, which was once considered to be the slate capital of the world, so be sure to expect some historical landmarks and compelling beauty as you spend time here.

The town comes with a plethora of places to eat and drink and shops for holiday gifts and essentials, accompanied by a range of attractions to keep all entertained.

Here you will find Llechwedd, which tells the story of the men who built the industry, Bounce Below, where you can bounce from net to net in a cavern the size of a cathedral and Zip World Caverns for a journey through the underground caverns on zip lines.

From here, you can also look forward to exploring the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, ideal for explorers both on foot and on bike, with several routes from the doorstep on the cottage.

Alternatively, venture a short distance to Cardigan Bay coastline, to spend time at the glorious Black Rock Sands and to explore the enchanting Italianate-style village of Portmeirion, boasting iconic architecture, award-winning restaurants, exotic gardens and sandy beaches, awaiting for you to enjoy.

Garreg Lwyd is a wonderful base for that North Wales getaway that you have been seeking.

About the location

TANYGRISIAU

Blaenau Ffestiniog 1.1 miles; Porthmadog 8 miles; Betws-y-Coed 15 miles; Beddgelert 16 miles.

Tanygrisiau, meaning "below the steps", refers to the stepped cliffs above this traditional Welsh village. The Moelwyn mountains protect the village from much of the northerly gales in the winter, and give it a pleasant southerly aspect with relatively mild weather considering its location high in Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The village stands amongst dramatic scenery, and Tanygrisiau is a good starting point for many walks, especially if your intention is to climb Moelwyn itself. Tanygrisiau was famous for its slate mining, producing a high quality black slate that was used across the world. Tanygrisiau railway station is on the famous Ffestiniog Railway, a narrow gauge railway built to carry slate from the mines down to the sea at Porthmadog; today it is a renowned tourist attraction providing stunning views on its trip to the coast. Only 1.1 miles away is Blaenau Ffestiniog, once the capital of slate quarrying and in the 18th century known as the "City of Slate". The town stands in an elevated, natural bowl amidst this mountainous region and has a good variety of shops and pubs, but is best known for its tourist attractions. One of the old quarries is now the renowned Llechwedd Slate Cavern. The famous narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway provides wonderful trips through spectacular countryside. Enjoy superb walks and bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin, one of the best mountain bike centres in Britain, as well as good climbing at the Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, wonderful sandy beaches, or great fishing or golf. Visit delightful Betws-y-Coed, the Italianate Village at Portmeirion, or Bala, with its renowned white water rafting opportunities.
