The cottage is beautifully decorated and has everything you need for your stay. Even though it was dog friendly, there was no dog smell or hair (we don't have a dog). “Beautiful cottage, great location.”

Could walk to the beach in 15 mins down the lane. Barmouth a short drive, 10 mins. Very nice to have milk, Welsh cakes and a bottle of wine on arrival. We found it a bit too noisy being right next to a road, so not as peaceful as we would have liked! A few more logs would have been nice for the fire. Couldn't find the bbq equipment! We loved the conservatory in the evening, nice and warm, and the garden is beautiful. Great communication with the owners, and helped with a problem with booking. Thank you for being so considerate.

“Welcomed with local treats and drinks, well kept pretty cottage with original features and blue sea view.”

Road was indeed busy as described, care needed to cross towards the pretty beach and station a few 100m away. Property was clean and owners were very attentive to ensure all was ok during our stay. Excellent access to local beauty, sand dunes, beaches and historical attractions. Lovely to come home to in summer and can imagine cosy with log burner in winter. Many thanks!

“My partner and I would like to extend our thanks to Claire & Jonathan who when needed responsive to our minor needs.”

The cottage has all the amenities one would need. Decorated with that touch which makes it feel like a home rather than a rental. We appreciated the off road parking, as we like to park up and walk or use public transport. The had no control of the weather, or the off season restrictions but made the best of it. Our daily choices of what to do and where to walk guided by the bountiful tourist information at the cottage. Our evenings spent warm and comfy in the lounge enjoying the wood burner fire watching whatever we fancied. We would recommend the comfort and luxury of this cottage. “Hwylfa'r Groes proved to be a very cosy and comfortable base for our holiday in mid Wales.”

Every room is well equipped and characterful. The location is excellent for getting out and about on foot or by car, train or bus - the little railway station is less than half a kilometre away. Lovely sandy beaches (mostly dog-friendly) abound, and up into the hills it's just beautiful. It's clear that the owners love the place too, and care about its upkeep both inside and out. The pretty little garden was a delight, and quite secure enough for our little terrier. It's well worth filling up the bird feeders - take fat balls and seed with you and you'll be rewarded with visits from grateful sparrows, robins, bluetits and maybe more. We'd love to visit again, to explore more, or even just unwind in front of one of the wood-burners.

“The cottage is in an ideal location with a short walk to the beach and immediate access to the mountains where there are plenty of walks with stunning views.”

It is a 2 minute walk to the nearest pub and a short drive to Barmouth. It was very busy during our stay due to school holidays and plenty of sunshine so it was super busy in Barmouth hence this cottage is away from the crowds but close enough to drive to if you want to visit Barmouth. We had one of our dogs with us and dogs are welcome on the beach in Talybont during summer unlike Barmouth so another reason why this cottage was ideal. The cottage itself is fully equipped with everything you would need and the owners are very helpful and can answer any questions you may have with a quick text message. The cottage is decorated to a high standard with lovely welsh stone walls and lots of history. The garden is beautiful with lots of established plants and places to relax. I didn't need the woodburners as it was great weather but I can imagine in the winter the woodburners wood be very cosy on a cold winters night. This cottage is exactly as the owners description and we hope to return.

“We had another lovely time at Hwylfa'r Groes, this being our second holiday there.”

The bungalow was lovely and clean and had everything that the two of us could need. The closeness to local amenities is good with a very short walk to a great pub round the corner and it is only a short drive to Barmouth. The road next to the bungalow does seem loud at first but this soon fades into the background and it is very quiet at night. If we were to stay in this area again we would definitely be checking to see if Hwylfa'r Groes is available.

“Lovely cottage and garden.”

The birds are super friendly if you feed them and love the bird bath! Neighbours are lovely too. Clear instructions for the hot water and appliances. As stated then property is situated on a busy road and you can hear traffic in the main bedroom, but it is not problematic. We stayed over the summer bank holiday period which I think was a pretty good test! The place is beautiful.. pub nearby and shop down by the beach(may close out of season). Lots to do in the area and if you get the chance go walk by the river it is beautiful. Cannot wait to visit this part of Wales again and would definitely consider staying in this lovely house.

You could do with having a folder to include how things work, where things are etc. We had cold showers for 2 days before noticing the Booster switch for hot water! The garden is a delight and a sun trap. Lovely next door neighbour.

Locally the pub Ysgethin Inn just round the corner did lovely food. Norbar provided some lovely fish and chips, Nineteen57 nice for a drink and fab Sunday Lunch at the Victoria Inn. Good communication with owners who couldn'y have been nicer.

Stay slightly spoiled by the attitude of the owner. Second bedroom had no bedding and when I rang to ask if it could be supplied was told I should have specified that both rooms were required. Also got a lecture on the cost of laundry! Have used Sykes cottages for more than ten years and this is the first problem I have encountered.

“We had a lovely break.”

The cottage is beautifully finished and very homely and comfortable. We (in particular our son) loved the little nautical themed ornaments and quirky nooks and crannies. We were originally concerned that the road would be noisy but it was surprisingly quiet. The kitchen was really well stocked and clean. The beds were really comfy - the only downside about the bedroom was that there was only one pillow each and they were quite thin. The garden is beautiful… perfect for morning coffee and glass of wine in the evening. Thanks for a lovely stay.

“We had a fantastic time at Hwylfa’r Groes, the cottage was very well presented and very clean.”

It had everything we needed, the wood burning stoves were a great touch. It is next to the main road so there was a bit of road noise but that very quickly became background noise that we didn’t notice. The location is very good, the Ysgethin Inn is only a couple of minutes walk away and served great food with very friendly staff. It is only about a mile down to the nearest beach and there are many others a short car ride away. I could go on and on but suffice to say we have booked again for next year, nuff said!

We would like to sincerely apologise. As a returning guest, you are fully aware of the quality of this cottage and must appreciate that the owners have had to make changes due to COVID-19 which includes a reduction in touch points but they still provide the basic cleaning materials that you mention. With all the extra cleaning duties e.g. steam cleaning, our cleaners had forgotten to replenish those essentials and the annoying thing for the owners, they have a loft full of everything needed but rely on the cleaners to do their job properly. As a result, the owners get a bad review for an error out of their control. We would have hoped that you would have brought this to our attention so we could have rectified the situation immediately. Our sincere apologies again, hopefully this has not put you off coming again when we would ensure your stay would exceed your Property Owner

“Although not dog owners ourselves, we have friends who have dogs, but have never experienced such bad dog odour, everytime we walked into the property it smelt of wet dog.”

This could only be improved if the rugs in the property were deep cleaned or changed everytime a new guest was due. We had to buy air fresheners, but it only masked the smell temporarily. The microwave had not been cleaned on our arrival. The bathroom was clean though. We know now not to book a property that allows animals of any sort, to be fair with covid around properties were far and few between when I booked, plus the price was very fair, but we will recomend to our friends with dogs. The property itself was in a lovely location with a sea view. Although right next to a busy road we slept fine. Lovely village pub a couple of minutes walk away with a river running by and Tony's pizza place was great for meals too, but make sure you go an order 1.5 hrs before you want it, as very busy due to having so many caravan sites/camp sites around. We did have a few drunk people walking past and being very noisy who came from the camp site directly next to the cottage a couple of nights running.

We sincerely apologise for your experience at Hwylfar Groes and it really doesn't matter whether you are dog owners or not, you should not have endured the smell of dog odour during your stay. On reading your review in our guest book, our cleaners immediately removed the rug. Thankfully, this was an isolated problem because as you would have seen in our guest book, our guest reviews covering the weeks directly beforehand were all positive and they certainly didn't mention anything regarding dog odour and many were not dog owners. Our guests directly after your visit commented We found the cottage very clean and comfortable" therefore confirming it was an isolated issue but one we take very seriously. For this reason, we have talked to our cleaners and other people to try to understand why this should only have happened to you and so that we can give other potential holiday makers the confidence that our cottage does not smell. The only plausible explanation was that since we now steam clean the cottage including the rug, this may have been a little damp by the nature of the process and with the heating being put on for the first time in months it may have exasperated any smell that was ordinarily undetectable. Note to all: We understand the awkwardness of complaining whilst staying at a property however, all owners would welcome you doing so in order that issues can be resolved with immediate effect rather than finding out by a negative review, guests can then enjoy the rest of their holiday. “The road is very busy with both walkers and cars which is mentioned in the description but the cottage only has curtains in the bedroom.”

Due to the layout this means people can see in to every area so privacy is an issue. We found the cottage to be well equipped but general cleaning was quite poor in the important areas: The shower screen and walls adjacent had thick soap scum and black mould. The bed had thick dust in the under drawers which made the empty one unusable and made us not want to use the extra pillows etc that were stored there. The dust was about an inch thick under the bed. I appreciate the bedroom is small but the bed was very small so I slept with my feet hanging over the edge. The kitchen cupboards could do with a wipe out as quite a bit of the crockery was 'sticky'. Likewise the low level areas in the kitchen were very dusty dirty and sticky. Overall we had a good holiday in a great location but would not stay here again

We are horrified to read your review and would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. We always leave contact details of our caretakers and encourage holidaymakers to contact them if they find anything untoward e.g. cleanliness then any such issue can be rectified so as not to impact your holiday in a negative way. We have taken immediate action as a result. We instructed our cleaning/changeover company who have rectified all of your issues and have assured us that this will be never be repeated. Within our details about the cottage, we have highlighted that the caretakers should be contacted if anything is found unsatisfactory. With regard to the privacy issue, as you know there are internal wooden shutters on all windows, curtains and shutters in the bedroom and curtains in the Garden Room, if you have any suggestions on how to make it more private we would like to hear them as we have considered net curtains or window graphics but these would cut down the light in the cottage as the windows are small and unless people were to stop and stare, it is difficult to look in. The majority of guests and indeed us enjoy the sea view and wonderful sunsets. Property Owner

“The cottage was lovely all on one level which was ideal for my wife, as she is disabled.”

The only thing she struggled with is the amount of room around the bed getting dressed etc.It is something we never even thought of asking when we looked on line.Another thing the walk to the beach in the reviews it said 10 to 15 mins walk away.I think it was further than that i am a good walker and there is no way its 10 to 15 mins away.It is very deceiving especially for somebody like my wife she would never have made it.The road was very noisy , but we were told about that.We loved the cottage , and the garden though.But from now on i think we will have to look for more disabled cottages.

“Lovely quirky cottage - excellent touches from owners lots of books dvd’s Games and information about area past and present .”

We were couple but double bunk bedroom was amazing and my grandchildren would have loved it. The welcome gifts even chewy stick for our dog very thoughtful. The location is well placed for touring around however in our 70’s we enjoyed Harlech sands Barmouth beach river walk and falls . We had relaxing holiday and were comfortable. The kitchen is like a galley well appointed no dishwasher and fridge and freezer very small don’t hold a lot so if party of 4 be careful how much to bring. There is coop in Barmouth

“This cottage was lovely and very well equipped with everything you needed for a great holiday with or without a dog.”

Fabulous beach is 10 to 15 mins walk away across the road, our dog had a whale of a time. Good comfy bed and great log burner and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. I will definitely go back. Thank you to Jon and Clare the owner's for my birthday gift it was lovely and lovely touch of some Welsh cakes.

“Mum and Myself had a wonderful time staying at this beautiful cottage.”

We where able to recall lots of memories of Talybont and holidays spent there years ago. Mum enjoyed the comfortableness of this Special cottage. Its nick nacks show how much thought and love has been put in by its owners. Our only regret is that we only had a week there.. Next time we will be booking for longer, it gave us both such a wonderful restful feeling. The owner and cleaner are so approachable and they really want you to enjoy your stay. I would imagine that any one visiting Hwylfar Groes will understand the sense of magic one gets by staying at this cottage. Served well by Train from Birmingham, the "Pleasant place at the crossing" has certainly rekindled my love for Wales. Thank you xx

“Absolutely lovely stay in this beautiful cottage.”

It is in an ideal location to explore this part of Wales, many tourist attractions within, or a little over, an hour's drive and beautiful Barmouth less than 10 minute's drive away. We had mixed weather, (to be expected in the UK!), but after a day out we could either be sat enjoying the sun in the garden or cosy in the lounge with the log burner. There has been great attention to detail by the owners to ensure that the cottage feels homely, and comfortable and we loved the little decorative items dotted about the place and quirky uses of space. There has to be a special mention of the lovely Welcome Goodies, (including an all important dog treat!). All in all a perfect and relaxing week was had and we woud definitely like to return! Many thanks.

“Lovely cottage in a great location; we reluctantly delayed the start of the break by 2 days due to extreme weather, both at home & journey.”

But once there the beautiful beaches within walking distance or a short drive more than made up for the disappointment. Cottage was very clean, extremely warm & cosy, and well thought out & equipped. It's larger than expected having seen the photos, and the garden was delightful, despite the season only just starting. It would be packed full of flowers, leaf and wildlife later in year, with a west facing raised patio area to enjoy the view and sun. Woke one day to thick layer of snow but it literally melted and disappeared by noon. Views of snowy mountains, all the way to Llyn Peninsular on bright days, thick banks of fog hugging valleys towards Caider Idris and Rhinogs was amazing. We imagine there'd be plenty of activity in nearby caravan parks in high season; power lines and trees felled by Storm Emma, let alone the cold weather just before arriving ensured the amount of holidaymaker travellers was minimal so we wandered the local area in peace. But even so I don't think the presence of many more people would put us off; the cottage locality makes up for that potential 'business'. Barmouth, Dyffryn and Harlech are just minutes away by car. Great pub literally minutes walk away and local restaurant serving authentic Italian amongst other dishes. Peaceful, very pretty and picturesque. Would love to go back; preferably not when The Beast from the East, Storm Emma and Pest from the West are brewing! However I suspect the cottage will be much in demand when word gets out and availability may become a problem in the future.

The property

This delightful and unique 17th century detached cottage is positively oozing with charm and is situated on the outskirts of the village of Talybont in Gwynedd.

This cottage has lovely sea views and is truly a superb location for exploring and taking in the marvellous varied scenery, perfect for small families, friends or even a romantic break for two.

The cottage has been lovingly renovated over the years with many original features retained and restored, with wonderful rustic charm the cottage is fused with modern, contemporary style interior which combines elegantly to create a magical holiday home.

The cosy lounge has an impressive stone inglenook fireplace with original bread oven and the warming woodburner is simply perfect for cosy evenings on the comfy sofa relaxing together after a great day exploring.

The garden room has a dining area and is a wonderful light and airy room enjoying pleasant views over the garden.

It is a lovely room to socialise together and plan the day’s activities over breakfast at the dining table and there is also a cosy sofa by the woodburner, creating a lovely quiet spot to sit back and relax with a book or watch birdlife in the garden.

The kitchen is small but perfectly formed and well-equipped for your needs.

The pretty double bedroom is beautifully presented with a wonderful whitewashed stone wall to the front and impressive thick window sills with feature slate and wooden window shutters that’s just adds to the charm.

This is a lovely room to wake up in as you can open the shutters and enjoy the sea views.

The second bedroom has bunk beds suitable for adults and children and again enjoys lovely whitewashed stone walls and even has a high Velux window, possibly good for a little star gazing if you’re lucky enough to be in the top bunk!

The contemporary shower room completes the accommodation with a modern suite and power shower.

Completing this beautiful cosy cottage is the garden.

To the rear of the cottage there is a gravelled driveway with a raised lawn area and steps up to a further patio area, perfect for alfresco dining with a glass of something cool and refreshing while taking in the distant sea views.

There is also secure storage space available for bikes, surfboards, canoes or fishing equipment!

Within 5 minutes’ walk of the cottage there a country pub, and restaurant and if you fancy a walk to the beach there are bars and restaurants to enjoy too.

The cottage is well positioned on the edge of the village of Talybont nearby to lovely walks along the Afon Ysgethin River through the woods with an abundance of wildlife.

The cottage is also only a 10 minute walk from the wonderful sandy beach perfect for long walks, building sand castles and taking a dip.

The next village of Dyffryn Ardudwy is a mile down the road where there are two pubs, cafes, a garage, shop and local butchers and also a Post Office for sending the post card!

The bustling seaside town of Barmouth is under five minutes’ drive away where there are plenty of shops, bars, activities and sites to see and enjoy.

There are some amazing walks from the door and Cwm Nantcol, Cwm Bychan and the Roman Steps up to the well-known Rhinog mountain range are all close by.

The beaches along this stretch of the North Wales coastline are beautiful with miles and miles of sandy shores and there are many cycling trails to enjoy.

This fantastic location also boasts good golf courses and medieval castles such as Harlech Castle just four miles away.

This cottage is wonderful for a get away-from-it-all break and an ideal base to explore this part of North Wales and the Snowdonia National Park any time of year.
